Course Description:
Start your Kindergarten / 1st Grade class off  creatively and learn how to incorporate the visual arts into your literacy block.  All activities are teacher-friendly and based on CA Standards for the Teaching Profession and Katie Wood Ray’s About the Authors, Writing Workshop with our Youngest Writers.   Motivate your students to become better readers, writers and artists.

About the Instructor:
Valen has been teaching with SDCS for over 20 years and has also taught in the private sector.  She has presented workshops at ASDEG and the San Diego Natural History Museum as well as working as a BTSA service provider.

Valen lives in La Mesa, CA, with her husband, John Adcock, where they raised their two sons.  Her interests include creating book clubs for children, sharing ideas with other teachers and hopefully inspiring students and grown-ups alike to become better educated. She has been nominated three times by former students to be included in Who’s Who in American Teachers.

Course Objectives:
Participants will:
1)
Discuss, share, and finally create reflective writings that demonstrate an understanding of the integration of aesthetics and effective environments following a presentation of options and ideas.
2)  Learn to assess student achievement through both the visual arts as well as more traditional written work samples.
3)  Participants will learn how to incorporate the arts into daily literacy blocks.
4)  Continue to design learning experiences following the guidelines provided in Ray’s About the Authors Writing Workshop with Our Youngest Writers.
5)  Finish and present the lesson started in Objective Four.
